چکیده

We consider the formation and evolution of vortices in a hydrodynamic shearing-sheet model. The evolution is done numerically using a version of the ZEUS code. Consistent with earlier results, an injected vorticity field evolves into a set of long-lived vortices each of which has radial extent comparable to the local scale height. But we also find that the resulting velocity field has positive shear stress Σδv r δv φ. This effect appears only at high resolution. The transport, which decays with time as t −1/2 , arises primarily because the vortices drive compressive motions. This result suggests a possible mechanism for angular momentum transport in low-ionization disks, with two important caveats: a mechanism must be found to inject vorticity into the disk, and the vortices must not decay rapidly due to three-dimensional instabilities.

On the Non-linear Hydrodynamic Stability of Thin Keplerian Disks

The non-linear hydrodynamic stability of thin, compressible, Keplerian disks is studied on the large two-dimensional compressible scale, using a highorder accuracy spectral method. We find that purely hydrodynamical perturbations, can develop initially into either sheared disturbances or coherent vortices. However, the perturbations decay and do not evolve into a self-sustained turbulence. Temp...

The Formation and Role of Vortices in Protoplanetary Disks

We carry out a two-dimensional, compressible, simulation of a disk, including dust particles, to study the formation and role of vortices in protoplanetary disks. We find that anticyclonic vortices can form out of an initial random perturbation of the vorticity field. Vortices have a typical decay time of the order of 50 orbital periods (for a viscosity parameter α = 10 and a disk aspect ratio ...

Three Dimensional Compressible Hydrodynamic Simulations of Vortices in Disks

We carry out three-dimensional, high resolution (up to 10242×256) hydrodynamic simulations of the evolution of vortices in vertically unstratified Keplerian disks using the shearing sheet approximation. The transient amplification of incompressible, linear amplitude leading waves (which has been proposed as a possible route to nonlinear hydrodynamical turbulence in disks) is used as one test of...

Three dimensional SU (2) lattice gauge theory is studied after eliminating thin monopoles and the smallest thick monopoles. Kinematically this constraint allows the formation of thick vortex loops which produce Z(2) fluctuations at longer length scales. The thick vortex loops are identified in a three dimensional simulation. A condensate of thick vortices persists even after the thin vortices h...

Compressing Thin Spheres in the Complement of a Link

Let L be a link in S that is in thin position but not in bridge position and let P be a thin level sphere. We generalize a result of Wu by giving a bound on the number of disjoint irreducible compressing disks P can have, including identifying thin spheres with unique compressing disks. We also give conditions under which P must be incompressible on a particular side or be weakly incompressible...
